Buildings evacuated in Midtown Manhattan after columns buckle

Emergency crews evacuated buildings in Midtown Manhattan after two structural columns buckled on the 21st floor of a building on East 42nd Street. The FDNY was called just before 8 AM over bricks falling from the building. A nearby school with about 400 children was evacuated, and no injuries have been reported.

A structural emergency in Midtown Manhattan forced the evacuation of several buildings on Tuesday morning after crews found that part of a high-rise had become unstable. The scare unfolded in one of the busiest areas of New York City, prompting a large response from emergency services and the closure of nearby streets as a precaution.

According to the account from a Fox 5 New York team, the FDNY received a call just before 8 AM reporting that bricks were falling from a building located on East 42nd Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. The report of falling debris in such a heavily trafficked part of Manhattan quickly drew first responders to the scene.

Upon arriving, crews determined the problem went beyond loose bricks. First responders found that two structural columns had buckled on the 21st floor of the building, a discovery that raised concerns about the stability of the structure and turned the call into a wider emergency operation focused on securing the area.

As a precaution, the evacuations extended beyond the affected building itself. Some nearby buildings were also evacuated while crews worked to investigate and secure the scene. Among those cleared out was a school with about 400 children, who were removed from the area as authorities moved to keep people away from the potential danger zone.

The response also brought significant disruption to the surrounding streets. As a result of the situation, most of 42nd Street and 43rd Street between 1st and 3rd Avenues were shut down, cutting off a stretch of Midtown to traffic while emergency teams assessed the building and worked at the scene.

Despite the seriousness of the structural failure, there was reassuring news on the human toll. No injuries have been reported in connection with the incident. Crews remained on site to investigate the cause and secure the building, as the city continued to manage the response to the unstable structure unfolding in the heart of Manhattan.
