Body matching missing Mississippi teen recovered off Horn Island

A body matching the description of missing 18-year-old Nolan Wells has been recovered off the Mississippi coast, days after he vanished during a July 4th boating trip to Horn Island. Authorities say they are still trying to determine what happened.

A body matching the description of a missing 18-year-old has been recovered off the Mississippi coast, in what officials fear is a tragic ending to a days-long search. Nolan Wells, a young man from Mississippi, had disappeared during a holiday boating trip, and his case had drawn widespread attention as family, friends and volunteers scrambled to find him over the weekend.

Wells vanished on the 4th of July after going on a boating trip with friends to Horn Island, a barrier island located about 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The island is a popular holiday destination, and the group had reportedly taken a boat trip out to it to mark the Independence Day holiday before something went wrong.

According to authorities, a body matching the description of the 18-year-old was recovered at around 8:45 on Monday morning, just off the shore of Horn Island. Officials indicated that it appeared they were dealing with a tragic outcome in the case, though the focus remained on establishing exactly what had taken place.

The timeline pieced together so far indicates that Wells was last seen on Saturday at about 3pm. After he could not be found, his disappearance quickly became a source of anguish for those close to him, who feared the worst as the hours passed without any sign of the teenager who had set out on the water with friends.

In the days after he vanished, Wells's family and friends made an emotional plea for help, flooding social media with pictures from the outing that showed him and a group of friends together on a boat. Their appeals helped turn the search into a community effort, spreading word of the missing teenager well beyond the immediate area.

The search itself drew in a range of responders. The Jackson County Sheriff's Department, the volunteer group known as the Cajun Navy and many other volunteers spent much of the weekend combing the area around the island and the surrounding waters, working through the holiday period in the hope of finding Wells alive.

Even after the recovery, it remains unclear exactly what happened to Wells. Authorities said they are still working to figure out what went wrong on the trip, while the community he was part of is left to grieve. The circumstances that led an ordinary holiday outing to end in tragedy are now the subject of continuing inquiries.
