Nine people were injured when a swing ride malfunctioned at a state fair outside Nashville, in a frightening scene captured on video by a visitor.
The incident involved a wave swinger, the spinning ride on which passengers sit in seats suspended by chains. A visitor recorded the ride on Wednesday as it turned dangerous.
In the footage, the seats can be seen suddenly swinging lower and closer to the fence that rings the ride, rather than sweeping safely overhead.
Riders were slammed into the railing as the seats swung out of their normal path, leaving several people hurt.
Witnesses described a terrifying scene, saying riders were screaming and crying as the ride went wrong.
State officials said the ride had passed inspection before it was put into operation at the fair, adding to questions about how the malfunction occurred.
An investigation is now underway to determine exactly what went wrong and why the wave swinger failed, as the nine injured riders recover.
