A gang member has been sentenced in federal court for his role in two killings in Nassau County, according to prosecutors, closing another chapter in a case that dates back nearly a decade.
Kevin Cuevas Del Cid was sentenced after pleading guilty to his part in the killings, prosecutors said. He admitted to posing as a woman on Facebook to lure Karen Pineda to a wooded area near the border of Merrick and Freeport.
Prosecutors say that once there, Pineda was killed by Del Cid and other gang members. The killing took place in May of 2016.
According to prosecutors, Del Cid also helped kill 15-year-old Javier Castillo in Freeport about five months later, the second of the two Nassau County killings tied to him.
The two deaths were among a series of gang killings that investigators and prosecutors have worked to bring to court over the years.
With the sentence handed down in federal court, authorities marked another step in holding those responsible accountable for the violence in Nassau County.
