A deputy shot a man in northeast Harris County on Wednesday after an hours-long standoff at a home that ended when the man came out of the garage holding two knives, authorities said. The shooting capped a tense, drawn-out confrontation that had drawn a heavy police response to a house at the end of a residential street.
According to authorities, a woman who lived at the home with her son called police just after 1 p.m. When officers arrived, the woman had come out of the house. She had injuries, including a cut to her face, and was helped away from the scene.
The man remained inside, and police began negotiating with him, trying for about two hours to persuade him to come out. As the standoff dragged on, officers said they were unable to bring it to a peaceful end despite the extended effort to talk him out.
During that period, heavy smoke began pouring from the home. Police said they believed a fire had been set inside. They could not confirm for certain who started it, but said the man was the only person inside the house at the time.
Rather than come out through the front, the man eventually emerged through the garage. Authorities said he was holding two knives as he came out, and it was at that moment that a deputy fired his weapon, striking him.
The man was transported to a hospital. Authorities did not immediately have word on his condition. The woman who had called police was believed to be in stable condition following the confrontation.
Officials said the scene remained active as investigators worked to piece together what had happened. In keeping with department policy, authorities said they expected to release body-worn camera video within 45 days, at which point they would be able to give a more complete account of the deputy-involved shooting.
