Riders who rely on one of Brooklyn and Queens' subway lines will need to plan ahead this weekend. According to Eyewitness News, starting tonight, parts of the G train will close down for the weekend as the MTA carries out extensive repairs, taking a stretch of the line out of service for several days rather than the usual overnight window.
The shutdown is not a brief one. According to the account, trains will not run on the affected section until Wednesday morning at 5:00, meaning the disruption will stretch well beyond the weekend itself and into the middle of next week before normal service resumes on that part of the line.
The transit agency has explained what the work involves. According to Eyewitness News, the MTA says the crews will be doing track work and installing new signals during the closure, the kind of maintenance and modernization that generally requires trains to be kept out of the affected area while it is carried out.
To keep people moving, the agency is putting a substitute in place. According to the account, shuttle buses will run in place of the section of the G where service is suspended, giving riders an alternative along the corridor while the trains are unable to operate through that portion of the route.
The weekend work is not the end of the disruption either. According to Eyewitness News, service will also stop for overnight work next Monday through Friday, extending the impact into the following week for those who ride the line during late-night hours after the main weekend closure wraps up.
For regular riders, the message from the transit agency is to prepare in advance. According to the account, those whose route depends on the affected stretch of the G are being advised to take note of the closure and the shuttle bus arrangements, so they can plan their trips around the suspended service over the coming days.
