New York City is putting a dedicated repair team into its parks, playgrounds, recreation centers and sports courts. According to Eyewitness News, the team, known as the Renew Crew, is being sent across the five boroughs, and its stated goal is to complete as many as 30 projects at those sites over the next three weeks.
The initiative follows a large number of public complaints about the state of the city's parks. Eyewitness News reports that the city has received more than 5,000 complaints so far this year, and it is those complaints that the Renew Crew has been assigned to work through over the three-week span.
To carry out the work, Mayor Mamdani says the city will invest 2.3 million dollars. According to the mayor, that spending is directed specifically at addressing the more than 5,000 complaints the city has received about its parks this year.
The Renew Crew is made up of 24 people drawn from several trades. The team consists of painters, electricians, plumbers and other specialists, who are being deployed across the five boroughs to the playgrounds, recreation centers and sports courts where the repairs are planned.
Announcing the plan, Mamdani placed the city's parks at the center of daily life. Our parks are the beating heart of the city, he said, where families can relax together, where children can play, and where people can find peace amidst chaos, and we will not allow them to be neglected any longer.
The mayor also said the Renew Crew's work will improve the quality of life for New Yorkers, linking the repairs directly to how residents experience the parks. It was on that basis that he presented the three-week effort and the 2.3 million dollar investment as worthwhile for the city.
Mamdani is also asking residents to take part in identifying what needs fixing. He urged anyone who sees damage in a city park, playground or recreation center to call 311, making that line the way for the public to report problems to the crew.
