Federal and local investigators turned their attention to the New York Police Department on Wednesday, carrying out a series of searches tied to a corruption inquiry. According to News 12 New York, the NYPD and the FBI executed search warrants at several homes connected to current and former officials of the department, in an operation that quickly became one of the biggest stories in the city.
The searches reached into the senior ranks of the force. Among the homes searched was that of James McCarthy, the chief of Manhattan South, one of the department's top commanders. Investigators also searched a home belonging to a former chief spokesperson for the NYPD, signalling that the inquiry touches figures who have held prominent positions inside the organisation.
For now, much about the case remains under wraps. Authorities have not released details about the investigation, leaving open questions about exactly what conduct is being examined and how far the inquiry might reach. What is clear is that both local agents and federal authorities were involved in carrying out the warrants.
City leaders framed the searches as part of a deliberate push to clean up the department. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the operation was part of Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch's effort to root out corruption within the NYPD, presenting the action as evidence that wrongdoing inside the force would be pursued rather than ignored.
Commissioner Tisch used the moment to set out her own standard for the department. In a statement, she promised New Yorkers that under her leadership the NYPD would conduct itself with integrity, describing the investigation and the morning's actions as part of an ongoing effort to hold the department to its highest ideals.
She carried the same message to a police graduation ceremony. Addressing new officers, Tisch told them they must act with integrity, saying the stakes could not be any higher and warning that if they failed to meet that standard, the consequences would be swift and they would be severe.
The mayor echoed that emphasis on public trust. Speaking at an unrelated event in the Bronx, Mamdani said government should serve the public with integrity, and that any corruption would amount to a serious violation of the responsibility carried within the NYPD and a breach of the trust placed in it by the public.
