Three police officers in Philadelphia were shot and wounded in a sudden burst of gunfire, but all three are now described as stable and are expected to survive, according to city officials. The suspect who opened fire on them was killed at the scene. Mayor Cherelle Parker and the city's police commissioner shared the update after a tense night, expressing relief that the officers had pulled through.
According to the account given by police, the shooting unfolded when a man walked into what was already an active crime scene. Officers had been working at a location where a number of spent shell casings were on the ground from an earlier incident. The man, who police said was not licensed to carry a firearm, moved into that scene and then engaged the officers, catching them by surprise that he was armed.
Four officers ultimately returned fire during the confrontation, and three of them were struck by gunfire. Officials credited the officers' training and their understanding of the dangerous situation they were in with allowing them to protect themselves and respond, even though they had been taken by surprise. The suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire.
The mayor and the police commissioner said they had met with all three wounded officers, who were in good spirits considering what had occurred. The commissioner offered some details about them, describing one as a sergeant with eight years on the job who is married with four children, another as a 43-year-old with two years on the job and no children, and a third as a 30-year-old who has been on the job for eight years and has no children.
Officials also said that a woman who owned a car that was struck by gunfire was taken to Jefferson Hospital. They said they were not aware of her being injured, though she was being checked over, noting how traumatic it would be for anyone caught in such a situation. The focus, they stressed, remained on the recovery of the wounded officers.
Investigators said it was still very early in the process and that many questions remained, including whether the shooting was premeditated and why the man had chosen to walk into the crime scene and engage the officers. According to police, there was no indication that the suspect had been involved in the initial incident that had drawn officers to the location. Authorities said they would continue the investigation in the coming days and would not yet confirm details about the suspect.
