Police in Plantation, Florida, have launched an investigation after a young child was found dead in a car at a daycare on Monday evening. Authorities have not yet released a cause of death, and officers were continuing their inquiries late into the night as the local community tried to come to terms with the loss of such a young life.

According to school leaders, the sequence of events came to light when a parent arrived at the daycare in the evening to collect their child. Staff told the parent that the child had never actually been dropped off there that day. It was at that point, school leaders said, that the parent went to the back seat of their car and discovered the child unresponsive.

Police said they received 911 calls shortly after half past five in the afternoon. The child was found unresponsive inside a car parked in the lot of the World of Discovery Academy, located on Northwest 4th Street. By the time first responders reached the scene, the young boy had already died, and efforts at the location turned to securing the area for investigators.

A large police presence gathered at the daycare through the evening, with officers cordoning off the parking lot and a tent set up over a black SUV as part of the investigation. The visible scale of the response reflected the seriousness with which authorities were treating the case as they worked to establish exactly what had happened.

School leaders said the child was a little boy who was around eighteen months old. Out of respect for the family, and in line with standard practice in cases involving a child, no further identifying details were released, and police did not publicly discuss the circumstances beyond confirming that the matter remained under active investigation.

People living and working in the surrounding area said they were shocked and deeply saddened to hear of what had happened, with several describing it as the kind of news that is especially hard to absorb when it involves a child. As the investigation continued, authorities had yet to provide additional information about how the boy came to be left in the vehicle.
