Seattle police are searching for a suspect after an overnight shooting near the University of Washington. The gunfire erupted in the city's University District, a densely populated area that sits alongside one of the state's largest college campuses. Officers were still trying to track down the shooter hours after the incident.
The shooting happened in the heart of the neighborhood. According to police, it took place near Northeast 45th Street and University Way, a busy commercial corridor lined with shops and restaurants, just after 2 a.m. The early-morning timing meant the streets were far quieter than during the day.
The aftermath was visible well into the night. A stretch of the street was cordoned off with yellow police tape as investigators processed the scene, gathering evidence and piecing together what led to the gunfire.
At least one person was struck. Police say the victim was taken to a hospital, but as of the latest update they had not released any information about the person's identity or condition, leaving it unclear how seriously they were hurt.
The search for the person responsible was still active. Investigators described the suspect only as a man wearing a black sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes, and said he had not been located in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
With limited details available, police turned to the public for help. The department asked anyone who saw what happened, or who may have relevant video or information, to come forward and contact investigators directly.
The investigation remained in its early stages. Authorities had not released a possible motive or said whether the victim and suspect knew each other, and the case adds to concerns about gun violence flaring in busy urban neighborhoods during the overnight hours.
