Construction on a new Smith Point Bridge in Shirley, on Long Island, is set to begin in just a couple of days, according to Suffolk lawmaker Jim Mazzarella.
Mazzarella shared an update on the timeline, posting a video showing where the work will be based as crews prepare to get started on the long-awaited project.
According to Mazzarella, two staging sites will be used for the construction. One lot has already been cleared at the head of the bridge, on the William Floyd Parkway.
The second staging site sits parallel to where the current bridge begins, near the marina, and will include a temporary pier to support the work.
Officials say the first step is to build that pier, after which crews will start trucking in the materials needed for the new bridge.
Mazzarella noted that beachgoers heading to the area should be aware of the work as the project gets underway in the coming days.
