Texas teacher arrested over improper relationship with student

Texas teacher arrested over improper relationship with student | AVALW News

A Dickinson ISD teacher in Texas, 46-year-old Kristi Hanks, has been arrested and jailed, accused of an improper relationship with a 16-year-old student at a Galveston County alternative education program.

A teacher with the Dickinson Independent School District in Texas has been arrested and jailed, accused of having an improper relationship with a 16-year-old student. The case, handled by authorities in Galveston County, has drawn attention because of where the teacher was working and the age of the student involved.

The educator has been identified as 46-year-old Kristi Hanks. She was charged with improper relationship between an educator and a student, a serious offense under Texas law, and was being held on a bond set at $100,000 following the arrest.

The setting of the case adds to its weight. Hanks had been assigned over the summer to teach at the Galveston County Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program, a facility that serves certain students who have been removed or expelled from their regular schools and placed in an alternative setting.

According to investigators, the allegations center on a 16-year-old student from that program. They say Hanks frequently contacted the student outside of an academic setting, a pattern of communication that became a central focus of the inquiry into her conduct.

The case came to light after concerns were raised internally. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office said it began investigating Hanks earlier this month, after the school reported worries about the nature of her relationship with a student, which set the investigation in motion.

The school district moved to distance itself once it became aware of the situation. Dickinson ISD placed Hanks on administrative leave after learning of the allegations, a step that was taken before officials were even formally notified that an arrest had been made.

The arrest itself came on Wednesday morning, capping an investigation that had been building over the preceding weeks. With the felony charge now filed, the matter moves into the court process, where the allegations against Hanks will be examined further as the case proceeds.
