Eight families have been left without a home after a massive fire tore through a building at the Tuxedo Heights condominium complex on Parkview Drive, in Tuxedo, in Orange County, earlier in the day. The blaze did enough damage that the structure has since been condemned, turning what had been an ordinary residential building into an unsafe shell and forcing everyone who lived there to find somewhere else to stay.
For the people inside, the fire came without warning in the middle of the night. Residents described being roused from sleep and rushing out with little more than the clothes on their backs. One resident recounted grabbing family members and hurrying outside, saying they could only stand and watch the flames take hold of the place they called home.
The scale of the destruction was plain once daylight revealed the building. The roof had partially collapsed and windows were blown out, while inside one stairwell the walls and ceilings had caved in. The damage left the structure visibly compromised, the kind of devastation that explains why officials moved quickly to declare it unsafe to enter. At its height, the fire was large enough that some residents feared it might spread to the other buildings in the complex.
According to property management, eight condominium units were destroyed in the fire, displacing the eight families who lived in them. The losses were compounded by the response itself, as whatever the flames did not consume was instead ruined by the water used to put the fire out, leaving little for residents to salvage from their apartments.
Amid the loss, there was at least one piece of relief: no one was hurt in the fire. Still, some pets remained missing in the aftermath, an added worry for families already reeling. A man who lives in the building next door said he watched the scene unfold in disbelief, describing it as frightening and saying his stomach churned as he looked on for the sake of his neighbors.
With the immediate danger over, the focus has shifted from escaping the fire to figuring out what comes next for those who lost their homes, with hopes that the community will band together to help. Authorities have said the fire does not appear to be suspicious, but the exact cause remains under investigation as officials work to determine how it started.
