Fire destroys 50 units at UC Riverside apartment complex displacing 115 residents as firefighters rescue trapped cats
A major fire ripped through a 112-unit apartment complex near UC Riverside in southern California, destroying or damaging approximately 50 units and displacing 115 residents, many of them university students. All occupants escaped safely and firefighters returned three cats to their owners after searching the damaged structure.
A devastating fire swept through a large residential complex near the University of California Riverside campus, gutting the first and second floors of a multi-building property and leaving more than a hundred people without a home. The blaze struck a complex comprising one hundred and twelve units, of which roughly fifty sustained damage ranging from severe structural destruction to smoke and water contamination, according to Riverside City firefighters who battled the flames.
The most critical piece of good news to emerge from the chaos was that every single resident managed to escape the burning buildings without injury. Many of the displaced occupants are students at UC Riverside who now face the prospect of finding alternative accommodation during what for some is the final stretch of the academic year. In total, one hundred and fifteen people have been classified as displaced by the fire.
One resident, who asked not to be identified, described the terrifying sequence of events that unfolded as the fire took hold. She noticed a burst pipe in her hallway and then observed thick smoke pouring from her bathroom before realising the situation was rapidly deteriorating. From the overhead perspective captured by the Sky Fox helicopter, the full scale of the destruction became apparent, with the roof of at least one section of the complex completely collapsed and the interior exposed to the sky.
In a moment that brought relief amid the devastation, firefighters who re-entered the damaged structure during their secondary search discovered three cats that had been left behind when their owners fled. The animals were safely extracted and reunited with their visibly emotional owners at the perimeter of the scene, providing a rare uplifting moment in an otherwise harrowing evening for the affected community.
The cause of the fire has not been officially determined, though multiple residents told Fox 11 that a plumbing company had been conducting repair work at the complex shortly before the blaze erupted. The arson investigation team has been unable to enter the structure while firefighters complete their work to ensure the site is safe. Once cleared, investigators will begin the painstaking process of tracing the fire's point of origin and establishing whether the construction activity played any role in igniting the inferno.
