Two people are dead after a head-on crash on Route 28 in Ulster County, New York. According to News 12, the victims were a 19-year-old from Long Island and a 72-year-old from the city, both of whom lost their lives in the same collision on the state road.
Police identified the younger driver as Peter Bonifant, of Smithtown. Investigators say Bonifant was heading west on Route 28 when, for reasons that are not yet clear, he crossed over into the eastbound lane. It was there, in the path of oncoming traffic, that his car collided head-on with another vehicle.
The other driver was named by police as Philip Jacobus. His car was traveling in the eastbound lane when it was struck by Bonifant's vehicle coming the other way, leaving both men caught in a direct, front-to-front impact.
The consequences were fatal for both drivers. According to News 12, Bonifant and Jacobus were each pronounced dead at the hospital, making it a crash that claimed two lives across the two vehicles involved.
For now, the central question remains unanswered. Police say they do not know why the teenager crossed into the wrong lane, leaving the cause of the deadly maneuver as the focus of what investigators still have to determine about the crash on Route 28.
