A police attempt to stop a speeding car in Westchester County ended in a double-fatal crash and the recovery of two stolen handguns, and the New York State attorney general's office has now opened an investigation into the deaths. What began as an effort to pull over a dangerously fast driver ended moments later with two young men dead at the scene.
According to police, the sequence began on Friday when officers spotted a car traveling at almost 100 miles per hour on Route 9A in Westchester County. Recognizing the extreme speed and the risk it posed to other drivers, an officer moved to catch up to the vehicle as it sped along the roadway.
The chase was brief. Only moments after the officer tried to close the distance, police found the car off the road and wrapped around a tree. The force of the impact was severe, and both men inside the vehicle were killed, turning a traffic enforcement effort into a deadly scene.
Authorities identified the two people who died as 20-year-old Ryan Herrera of Yonkers and 21-year-old Jaden Sanabria of the Bronx. Both were in the car when it left the road, and neither survived the crash into the tree along the Westchester roadway.
As officers examined the wreckage, they made another discovery that added a criminal dimension to the case. Inside the vehicle, police recovered two stolen semi-automatic pistols, raising questions about why the two men were driving at such high speed while carrying illegal firearms.
Because the deaths occurred in connection with a police encounter, the case has been referred to the New York State attorney general's office, which is now investigating. Under state rules, that office reviews deaths that involve interactions with law enforcement, examining how officers acted in the moments leading up to the fatal outcome.
Investigators are still working to reconstruct exactly what happened in the short span between the officer first spotting the speeding car and the deadly crash that followed. The findings of that review are expected to clarify the circumstances that left two young men dead and to account for the stolen weapons found inside the vehicle.
