A frightening moment for a mother in White Plains ended in relief this week, after police officers moved quickly to free her infant from a locked car. According to News 12, officers are being praised for rescuing the three-month-old baby, who had been accidentally locked inside the vehicle, within just minutes of the emergency call.
The scare unfolded at a busy spot in the city. The call came in from the City Center parking garage, where a crowd had gathered in one of the lanes and people were calling for help as the infant remained trapped inside the car.
White Plains Public Safety officials described how their officers responded. Captain Vinnie Battaglia explained that the department was able to get the infant out of the vehicle within minutes, moving fast in a situation where every moment counted.
The rescue was aided by specialized equipment carried for exactly these emergencies. According to police, a sergeant keeps a lockout tool in the rear of his vehicle and used a wedge that inflates to create space between the doorframe, allowing officers to reach in and retrieve both the child and the keys.
Officials stressed that the speed of the response was critical. They noted that the temperature inside a vehicle can rise very quickly, posing a serious danger to both children and animals, which is why getting the infant out without delay was so important on a warm summer day.
In the end, the outcome was a happy one, with the mother reunited with her child. Police used the incident to remind drivers to always make sure they have their keys before closing the car door, and to call 911 right away if they ever find someone, whether a child or a pet, locked inside a vehicle.
