The launch marks the start of a journey that has been many years in the making. According to NASA, the observatory will survey vast numbers of stars and galaxies, using a set of advanced instruments to probe phenomena that have long puzzled astronomers across the world.

The mission got under way with a dramatic departure from the Florida coast. According to NASA, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope lifted off at 7:26 a.m. Eastern time on 30 August 2026, riding into the sky aboard a powerful SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket.
The launch took place from one of the most historic sites in the history of American spaceflight. According to NASA, the rocket departed from Launch Complex 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a launch pad with a long history of major and pioneering missions.
A survey of the dark universe
At the very heart of the mission lies an effort to understand the unseen components of the cosmos. According to NASA, the telescope is designed to explore dark matter, dark energy and worlds beyond our own solar system, which are known to astronomers as exoplanets.
These rank among the most profound and least understood topics in the whole of modern astronomy. By studying them across enormous stretches of the sky, the observatory aims to help scientists piece together how the universe has evolved over billions of years.
A thousand times faster than Hubble
One of the telescope's defining features is the sheer scale at which it is able to work. According to NASA, Roman combines a large field of view with crisp infrared vision, allowing it to survey the universe around a thousand times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope.
That capability could transform the pace of astronomical discovery in the years ahead. A far wider view means the observatory can capture much more of the sky in a single image, building up a vast survey of stars and galaxies far more quickly than earlier instruments could.
Two powerful instruments
The telescope carries two main instruments on board, each with its own distinct role. According to NASA, the first is the Wide Field Instrument, a 300-megapixel infrared camera that is built around a set of 18 individual 4K detectors.
The second instrument is aimed at a rather more specialised task. According to NASA, the Coronagraph Instrument is designed to image planets similar to Jupiter, blocking out the intense glare of their host stars in order to reveal the distant worlds around them.
A million-mile journey
Reaching its final working position will take the observatory a considerable amount of time. According to NASA, Roman is bound for the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2, a location roughly a million miles from Earth, on a three-month journey out to its final orbit.
This particular point in space offers a stable and highly advantageous vantage point for observation. From there, the telescope will be able to carry out its detailed surveys with the kind of clear and uninterrupted view of the cosmos that missions of this kind require.
A smooth early ascent
The opening stages of the flight appeared to go very much according to plan. According to NASA, ground controllers at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland began receiving telemetry from Roman seven minutes after launch, with the spacecraft separating from the rocket 31 minutes into the flight.
A further important milestone followed a little over an hour later in the flight. According to NASA, the deployment of the telescope's solar panels and sun shade was confirmed 1 hour and 23 minutes after launch, marking a promising start to a mission that could reshape our understanding of the universe.
