Peel Regional Police have unveiled a new helicopter that officials say will help officers combat crime across the region. The aircraft is the first of five helicopters that the province announced a couple of years ago to support police forces across the Greater Toronto Area and in Ottawa. The very first chopper has now landed in Peel region and, according to police, is ready to fly.
The helicopter is fully equipped with the latest technology, including thermal imaging, and can reach speeds of up to 250 kilometres an hour. Officials say it can provide air support for more than four hours at a time, allowing it to stay overhead during lengthy operations. The combination of speed and endurance is intended to let the aircraft cover a large area in a single flight.
To illustrate its reach, Peel's police chief said the new helicopter can travel from its hangar in Caledon to Lake Ontario in just six minutes. That kind of rapid movement, officials argue, means suspects can no longer run and hide as easily as they used to. Police described the aircraft as an enhancement to work the force is already doing rather than an entirely new capability.
According to police, the helicopter will help officers track suspects from the air and provide those on the ground with vital real-time intelligence. They said it will help combat auto theft, organized crime, human trafficking, illegal guns and drug smuggling, and allow officers to respond faster and more safely when every second counts. Officials also framed it as a tool that supports investigations, enhances community safety and helps them support victims.
The concept is not new to the region. York Regional Police have been using a helicopter for decades and have released many videos over the years showing how it is used as a crime-fighting tool. Those uses have included tracking suspects through wooded terrain, following drunk drivers, hit-and-run drivers and stolen vehicles, and in many cases helping officers locate vulnerable, missing people.
The Peel aircraft is only the beginning of a wider rollout. Toronto, Halton, Durham and Ottawa police are also on deck to receive a helicopter, with the next one expected to be delivered in about a month and further deliveries to follow. In the meantime, officials said the new helicopter based in Peel will also assist neighbouring police forces until their own aircraft arrive.
The provincial commitment extends beyond the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa. Officials noted that the province last year announced additional funding to bring helicopters to the Windsor and Niagara regions as well, meaning more aircraft are still to come. For now, the arrival of the first chopper in Peel marks the initial step of a programme that is expected to expand across several police services in the months ahead.
