Champions League 2026-27 Kicks Off: 36 Clubs Begin the Road to Madrid

The biggest stage in European club football is back. The 2026 to 2027 UEFA Champions League gets under way this week, opening a long campaign that will keep supporters around the world glued to their screens until next summer.

The competition begins with its first round of fixtures, known as Matchday 1, spread across three evenings from the eighth to the tenth of September. It marks the start of another season of Europe's most prestigious club tournament.

A format built around one big league

The tournament continues with the league phase format that reshaped the competition in recent years. Rather than being split into small groups, all thirty six clubs are placed together in a single overall standing.

Within that structure, each team plays eight matches during the league phase. Every club faces eight different opponents, four times at home and four times away, giving supporters a varied run of fixtures from the very first week.

How the standings decide who moves on

At the end of the league phase, the single table sorts the field. The eight highest ranked teams earn a direct place in the round of sixteen, rewarding consistency across the opening months of the competition.

The clubs finishing from ninth to twenty fourth are not eliminated straight away. Instead they drop into a set of knockout play-offs, competing for the remaining eight places in the round of sixteen and a shot at the later stages.

A road that runs through winter

The league phase itself stretches across the autumn and into the new year, running from the eighth of September all the way through to the twenty seventh of January in 2027. It is a demanding schedule for every squad involved.

Once the table is settled, the knockout play-offs take place across late February, with matches scheduled between the sixteenth and the twenty fourth. Only then does the traditional bracket of the competition truly begin to take shape.

Toward the closing rounds

The round of sixteen is set for the middle of March, with ties played between the ninth and the seventeenth. The quarter-finals follow in early April, scheduled across two weeks from the sixth to the fourteenth of the month.

The semi-finals arrive at the turn of the season, taking place between late April and early May. By that point only four clubs will remain, each within touching distance of a place in the showpiece final.

The destination is Madrid

All roads this season lead to the Spanish capital. The final will be held on the fifth of June in 2027 at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, which will stage the championship decider for the second time in its history.
