Practical Magic 2 Conjures a Number One Box Office Debut After 28 Years

A long awaited sequel cast its spell over cinemas this weekend, as Practical Magic 2 opened at the very top of the North American box office. Nearly three decades after the original film first appeared, the return of its two beloved witches proved there was still a real appetite among audiences for a little movie magic.

Behind the new leader, the chart told a familiar story. Spider-Man: Brand New Day settled for second with about 8.4 million dollars, followed by The Odyssey with roughly 7.4 million. Runner opened with around 6.6 million, while the animated Coyote vs. Acme rounded out the top five with close to 6.2 million.

The success of Practical Magic 2 fits a wider pattern in which nostalgia and long dormant franchises are helping to power the autumn box office. Films that quietly built loyal audiences at home are increasingly being brought back to the big screen, and studios are betting that affection nurtured over decades can translate into ticket sales.

For now, the sisters Owens have proven they can still command a crowd.
