A new round of severe storms has swept across the US Midwest, unleashing at least six confirmed tornadoes stretching from Iowa to Illinois and forcing officials to declare a flash flood emergency across the region. The outbreak, which broadcasters described as a dangerous and deadly stretch of weather, sent driving rain and powerful winds through a broad swath of the heartland, leaving damage and disruption in its wake as darkness fell.
Alongside the tornadoes, there were more than 400 separate reports of damaging winds as the system moved through. In the suburbs of Chicago, driving rain and fierce gusts ripped through neighborhoods, with wind speeds nearing 100 miles per hour. Those gusts were strong enough to launch debris past homes, adding to the danger for residents who found themselves in the path of the fast-moving storms.
One of the hardest-hit communities was Flossmoor, Illinois, where reporters on the ground described downed trees and power lines just about everywhere they looked. The cleanup there was being complicated by yet more rain, which kept falling even as crews and residents began trying to clear the wreckage. The combination of wind damage and continuing downpours made the recovery effort slow and hazardous.
Farther east, in Cambridge City, Indiana, the story was one of rising water rather than wind. Swift water rescue teams were called in after floodwaters inundated streets in the community, which lies east of Indianapolis. Crews rescued more than a dozen people who had been trapped by the fast-rising water, in an area that had been drenched by nearly a foot of rain as the storms stalled overhead.
The flooding was not confined to a single town. Officials reported catastrophic flash flood emergencies across the heartland, with families having to be plucked from floodwaters in multiple locations as the rain overwhelmed streets and low-lying areas. Reports of significant flooding came in from across the region, underscoring how widespread the impact of the slow-moving system had become over the course of the evening.
The threat was far from over as night wore on. Flood watches remained in effect across a large area stretching from Indiana all the way to Virginia, and forecasters warned that more rounds of heavy rain were expected to push through by the following morning. That raised the prospect of additional flooding on already saturated ground, keeping emergency officials on alert well beyond the initial round of storms.
Emergency crews and swift water rescue teams remained mobilized across several states as the system continued to move through. With trees and power lines down, streets under water and more rain on the way, residents were urged to stay cautious and heed warnings while the cleanup got under way. The scope of the damage was still being assessed, and the continuing rain threatened to complicate recovery efforts into the next day.
