For anyone who has ever dreamed of standing beneath a sky rippling with green and violet light, 2026 is shaping up to be a rare and special year. The northern lights are putting on some of their strongest displays in more than a decade, and the coming weeks happen to fall in one of the best windows to go and see them.
A once in a decade window
The reason for the excitement lies with the sun. Our star is currently near the peak of its roughly eleven year activity cycle, a phase known as solar maximum, when eruptions on its surface send far more charged particles streaming toward Earth. Those particles are exactly what light up the sky as the aurora borealis.
We are now on the gently declining side of that peak, which means activity remains high, with major geomagnetic storms still occurring several times a month. This elevated period will not last forever, however, as the sun slowly winds down toward its quieter minimum expected around the end of the decade, so the chance is best taken soon.

The strongest stretches for viewing in 2026 fall across September and October, with another promising window arriving in February and March of next year. On any given night, the hours between roughly ten in the evening and two in the morning tend to offer the finest shows.

Around the equinoxes, which fall in late September and again in March, the way the Earth is angled toward the stream of particles from the sun tends to boost auroral activity. That makes the current autumn weeks an especially rewarding time to head somewhere dark and look north.

The classic destinations sit at high latitudes, within or close to the Arctic Circle, where the nights grow long and dark. In Europe, travellers flock to Tromso in Norway, Abisko in Sweden, Rovaniemi in Finland, and Reykjavik in Iceland, while the Scottish Highlands can also deliver on a strong night.
North America offers its own world class options, and Canada is right at the heart of them. Yellowknife, in the Northwest Territories, is famous among aurora hunters for its clear skies and position beneath the auroral oval, while Fairbanks in Alaska is another reliable favourite for those chasing the lights.
How to give yourself the best chance
Even in a strong year, seeing the aurora takes a little planning and a little luck. The single most important factor is darkness, so getting well away from the glow of city lights makes an enormous difference. A clear, cloudless sky is just as essential, since even the brightest display is hidden behind thick cloud.
It also pays to be patient and to come prepared. Dressing warmly for long spells standing outside in the cold, keeping an eye on the short term aurora forecasts that many apps and websites now provide, and being willing to stay up late all improve the odds of witnessing something truly unforgettable.
A wider reach this year
One of the joys of a solar maximum is that the lights occasionally escape their usual northern home. During the most powerful storms, the aurora can be pushed much farther south than normal, becoming visible from the northern United States and parts of central Europe, places that only rarely catch a glimpse of the phenomenon.
That wider reach means you do not always have to travel to the Arctic to be in with a chance. Keeping an eye on space weather alerts during a big storm can occasionally reward those much farther south with a faint glow on the horizon, though the brightest and most reliable displays still belong to the high latitude north.
Why it is worth the journey
Beyond the science, there is a reason the northern lights sit so high on so many travel wish lists. Watching the sky come alive with silent, shifting colour is the kind of experience that stays with people for a lifetime.
