Humanoid robots, machines built to move and work in spaces designed for people, are moving from demonstrations into real factories. One of the most closely watched examples has been taking place at a car plant in the United States.

BMW ran a pilot deployment using a humanoid robot from the company Figure at its Spartanburg site. The plant is one of BMW's largest, and the project was designed to see how such robots perform in a real manufacturing setting.
Ten Months of Work
According to BMW, the first robot, known as Figure 02, worked at the plant over a period of about ten months. It operated on shifts of around ten hours a day, from Monday to Friday, much like a human worker on the line.
Building the BMW X3
During that time, the robot supported the production of more than 30,000 units of the BMW X3, according to the company. It handled the precise removal and positioning of sheet metal parts used in the welding process.
Millions of Steps
BMW reported that the robot moved more than 90,000 components in total and covered roughly 1.2 million steps across about 1,250 operating hours. The task was demanding in both speed and accuracy, and physically tiring for people.
The Technology Inside

Robots like these rely on a combination of sensors, cameras and powerful onboard computers to sense their surroundings and control their movements. Advances in this kind of hardware have helped make it possible for humanoid machines to handle detailed factory tasks.
The Next Robot Arrives
According to BMW, a newer model called Figure 03 is now starting work at Spartanburg. It represents the next step in the project, building on what the company learned from the earlier robot during the pilot period.
A New Job in Logistics
BMW said the Figure 03 robot will sort unsorted components into sequencing trolleys that are then delivered to the assembly lines. The company described this logistics task as one that could be scaled across automotive production.
Built to Work Near People
According to BMW, the newer robot includes soft outer components for added safety around people and wireless charging so it can keep running longer between shifts. It also has reworked hands with sensors and small cameras for finer handling.
What It Means for Factories
The project offers an early look at how humanoid robots might fit into manufacturing. For now they are handling specific, repetitive tasks, and their wider role in factories will depend on how well they perform over time.
Looking Ahead
