Rounding out the upper tier is Michael, a biographical drama that reached about 372.3 million dollars. Its presence near the top suggests that audiences will still turn out in large numbers for a story built around a famous real life figure.

Original stories still break through

Not every hit carries a number in its title. Project Hail Mary, a science fiction feature, earned around 344 million dollars, proving that a fresh premise can still find a wide and enthusiastic audience when the concept connects.

Further down the list, the thriller Obsession reached roughly 263.5 million dollars, the fashion sequel The Devil Wears Prada 2 gathered about 220.6 million, and the horror title Backrooms pulled in close to 197.5 million dollars across the year.

A global picture

The story looks a little different around the world. In South Korea, Spider-Man: Brand New Day earned about 64.8 million dollars, while in Japan the animated film Detective Conan: Fallen Angel of the Highway led the market with 13.70 billion yen, close to 85.8 million dollars.

India told its own tale, where Dhurandhar: The Revenge stood as the highest grossing local film with a worldwide gross reported at 1,852.44 crore rupees. The results are a reminder that home grown cinema often rivals Hollywood in its own market.
