A securities filing shows Nvidia has agreed to guarantee up to 105 billion dollars in lease and power obligations for a huge OpenAI data centre in Ohio, a project that could reach eight gigawatts and cost around 500 billion dollars.
The race to build the computing power behind modern artificial intelligence has reached a staggering new scale. One of the largest single commitments yet has just been outlined for a vast data centre in the United States.
The plan brings together some of the biggest names in technology and energy. It shows just how much money and infrastructure the leading players believe will be needed to keep advanced computing systems running in the years ahead.
A 105 billion dollar guarantee

According to a securities filing, the chipmaker Nvidia has agreed to guarantee up to 105 billion dollars in conditional lease and power payment obligations. The commitment supports a huge new facility being developed for the company OpenAI.
A guarantee of this kind means Nvidia is effectively standing behind the project's long term costs. It is a powerful signal of confidence, and a reminder of how deeply intertwined the fortunes of these companies have become.
Inside the Ohio campus
The data centre will rise at the PORTS-Pike Technology Campus in Pike County, Ohio. It is being developed by SB Energy, a subsidiary of the SoftBank Group, which will build, own and operate the site once it is complete.
OpenAI, the company behind some of the best known artificial intelligence tools, has signed a lease running for as long as twenty years. That lengthy commitment underlines how central this single location will be to its plans.
Scaling to eight gigawatts
The project is designed to grow in stages. It is expected to begin with 4.25 gigawatts of computing capacity, with an option to add a further 3.75 gigawatts as demand for processing power continues to climb steadily.
At full strength, the campus could reach as much as eight gigawatts of capacity. That is an enormous amount of power, comparable to the output of several large power plants running at the same time.
A 500 billion dollar price tag
The scale of the ambition is matched by its cost. Reports put the total value of the project at roughly 500 billion dollars at today's prices, a figure that would have seemed unthinkable only a handful of years ago.
Such numbers reflect the intense demand for the specialised hardware that powers advanced computing. Building, powering and cooling these facilities has become one of the defining challenges of the technology industry today.
Jobs for the region
Beyond the headline figures, the project is set to have a real impact on the local economy. According to the announcement, it will create around 35,000 construction jobs during the building phase of the campus.
Once the site is up and running, it is expected to support about 2,500 permanent operating positions. For the surrounding area, that represents a significant and lasting source of skilled employment for the community.
What it means
The deal also cements Nvidia's central role in the industry. Beyond its financial guarantee, the company is investing 1.5 billion dollars in SB Energy and will serve as the exclusive chip provider for the initial phase of the campus.
For the wider sector, the project is a clear statement of intent. It suggests that the appetite for ever larger computing power shows no sign of slowing, even as the sums involved reach truly historic proportions.
