Behind the overall percentages lies an even more telling detail. The researchers report that 95 glaciers listed in the previous inventory have either disappeared completely or shrunk so much that they can no longer be mapped, a stark illustration of how some ice bodies are simply ceasing to exist.

What remains is also increasingly fragmented. According to the survey, about 87 percent of the glaciers that are still present are now smaller than half a square kilometre, while only nine glaciers in the whole country remain larger than five square kilometres, underlining how few sizeable glaciers are left.

The inventory reports median area loss rates ranging from around 2 to 3 percent per year in the more heavily glacierized regions, rising to almost 7 percent per year in areas where the glaciers are smaller and more exposed.

These differences show that the smallest glaciers are especially vulnerable, melting at a much faster rate than the larger ones. The authors conclude that glacier loss is accelerating overall, and that inventories need to be updated more frequently in order to keep pace with such rapid changes in the landscape.

Mapping the cracks in the ice

Alongside the inventory, other research is helping scientists understand how these glaciers behave as they retreat. A separate 2026 study produced the first nationwide map of visible crevasses across all of Austria's glaciers, using aerial imagery analysed with automated techniques to detect the cracks that scar the ice.

The results showed that crevasses are most common on steep, fast-moving glaciers and rarer on large, gently sloping ones, with the shape of the surface and the way the ice flows helping to determine where they form. Such maps can improve both scientific understanding and safety in mountain areas.

Glaciers are far more than scenery. They act as natural water reservoirs, releasing meltwater that feeds rivers during the warm season, and their retreat can affect water supplies, ecosystems and even tourism in mountain regions that depend heavily on their striking landscapes.

Because they respond so directly to temperature, glaciers are also seen as some of the clearest indicators of a warming climate. When ice that took centuries to build up melts within a few decades, it offers a visible and hard to ignore measure of how the environment is changing.

Taken together, the new data confirm that Austria's glaciers are shrinking rapidly and that the process is gathering speed. For the scientists behind the inventory, the message is clear: keeping a close and regular watch on these vanishing giants will be essential to understand and prepare for what comes next.
