Earlier this year humans travelled to the Moon and back for the first time in more than half a century. It was not a landing, but it was a landmark, and its echoes will shape the next decade of exploration in ways that are only starting to become clear.
A flyby half a century in the making

NASA launched the Artemis II mission on 1 April 2026 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The flight carried its crew on a journey of about ten days out to the Moon and back, a return to deep space that had been decades in the planning.
The mission's defining achievement was its most historic. Artemis II marked the first crewed lunar flyby in more than fifty years, putting people back in the vicinity of the Moon for the first time since the Apollo era drew to a close.
The numbers give a sense of how close they came. The spacecraft is reported to have performed its flyby around the Moon at a distance of about 6,545 kilometres, roughly 4,067 miles, on 6 April, sweeping past the surface before turning for home.
The crew who made the trip
Four people rode the mission into the history books. The crew consisted of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, together with Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency, a genuinely international team for a flagship flight.
Reid Wiseman carried the responsibility of command. As mission commander he led the crew through the flight's most demanding phases, from launch and translunar coast to the delicate business of bringing everyone safely back down.
The presence of a Canadian astronaut was more than symbolic. Jeremy Hansen's seat reflected the partnerships that now underpin deep-space exploration, a reminder that the modern return to the Moon is a shared effort rather than a single nation's project.
Proving the hardware with people aboard
Beyond the spectacle, the flight was a test. Artemis II is reported to have demonstrated the spacecraft's life support systems with a crew aboard for the first time, a crucial step that simulations and uncrewed flights alone cannot fully validate.
That distinction matters enormously for what follows. Sending people into deep space demands confidence that the systems keeping them alive will hold up under real conditions, and only a crewed mission can prove that beyond any doubt.
The journey ended with a return to Earth in the spring. The mission is reported to have splashed down off the coast of San Diego on 10 April, closing out a flight that had done what it set out to do and brought its crew home safely.
Laying the groundwork for what comes next
The mission was always meant to be a stepping stone. NASA has framed the flight as laying the foundation for an enduring presence at the Moon, the next objective in a programme that aims to do far more than repeat the achievements of Apollo.
The ambition stretches beyond the Moon itself. The lessons drawn from flights like this one are intended to feed into the far harder challenge that lies further out, the long-discussed goal of one day sending humans on to Mars.
A door reopened
For all that remains to be done, the significance of the moment is hard to overstate. After decades in which the Moon was a place humanity had left behind, Artemis II reopened the door, and the task now is to walk through it and stay.
