Coral reefs are the rainforests of the sea, yet the world has just lived through the fourth and most severe global bleaching event ever recorded. We look at what bleaching is, why it happened, and why it matters even far from the tropics.
Slip beneath the surface of a healthy tropical reef and you enter one of the busiest cities on Earth. Fish dart through forests of coral, anemones sway in the current and colour explodes in every direction. Yet across the world, more and more of these underwater cities are falling silent and turning a ghostly, lifeless white.
Rainforests of the sea
Coral reefs cover less than one percent of the ocean floor, but they are among the richest habitats on the planet, home to roughly a quarter of all marine species. Hundreds of millions of people also depend on them for food, for income from fishing and tourism, and for protection from storm waves.
The secret behind a reef lies in a quiet partnership. The coral animals share their tissues with tiny algae, which capture sunlight and hand most of the resulting energy to their hosts. In return the algae gain shelter, and it is they that give living coral much of its dazzling, shifting colour.
What bleaching really is

When the sea grows too warm for too long, that partnership breaks down. Stressed corals expel the algae living inside them, and without their colourful tenants they fade to a stark, skeletal white. This is coral bleaching, and it leaves the animals starving and dangerously weakened.
Bleaching is not the same as instant death. If the heat eases quickly enough, corals can take their algae back and slowly recover their colour and strength. But when marine heatwaves strike hard or return again and again, bleached reefs begin to die on a vast and heartbreaking scale.
The worst on record
That is exactly what the world has just witnessed. In April 2024 scientists confirmed the fourth global coral bleaching event in recorded history, a slow motion crisis that stretched on until it was finally declared over only in the middle of 2025, after gripping reefs across the whole planet.
Its scale was staggering. Bleaching level heat struck around eighty four percent of the world's reef area, across the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans and in more than eighty countries. Earlier global events had touched twenty one, thirty seven and sixty eight percent of reefs, making this by far the most severe on record.
An ocean running a fever
The root cause is no mystery. As we heat the planet by burning fossil fuels, the ocean absorbs most of that extra warmth, and the marine heatwaves that trigger bleaching grow longer, fiercer and more frequent. The alert scale used to warn of the danger even had to be extended with new and higher levels.
Why this reaches even our shores
It would be easy to think that reefs are a distant, tropical concern, far removed from our grey northern seas. But the ocean is a single, connected body of water, and its health underpins the climate, the fisheries and the weather that shape life here too. What happens on a reef never truly stays on the reef.
Signs of hope
The picture is grim, and yet it is not hopeless. Some corals prove tougher than others, damaged reefs can slowly rebuild when given respite, and scientists are racing to breed and replant hardier colonies. Well managed marine protected areas give reefs the breathing space they so badly need to recover.
What we can do
The single most important thing any of us can do is help cool the planet by cutting the emissions that are heating the sea. Supporting careful reef protection, choosing sustainable seafood and backing serious climate action all add up, turning distant concern into something that genuinely helps.
The next time you see an image of a reef blazing with colour, remember that it is not a decoration but a living wonder under very real threat. Whether our children inherit these underwater cities or only their bleached ruins depends on the choices we make on land, right now.
