A decade-long analysis of nearly 10,000 older women suggests heavy coffee drinking is linked to slightly lower bone density, while tea shows a small association with stronger bones.
For millions of people, the day does not truly begin until the first cup of coffee or tea. These everyday rituals feel far too ordinary to matter much for long term health, yet a large new analysis suggests that what fills the mug may have a subtle influence on the strength of our bones as we grow older.
A decade of data on ten thousand women
Researchers at Flinders University examined the habits of nearly ten thousand women aged sixty five and older, following them for around ten years. Drawing on information from the long running Study of Osteoporotic Fractures, they measured bone mineral density at the hip and the femoral neck, two areas where fractures in later life can be especially serious.
Bone health becomes a pressing concern with age, particularly for women after menopause, when the natural loss of bone density speeds up. Fractures of the hip in particular can be life altering, so scientists are keen to understand which everyday factors might nudge the odds in a helpful or a harmful direction over the long run.
How coffee fits into the picture
The findings on coffee were reassuring for moderate drinkers. Women who drank around two to three cups a day showed no signs of harm to their bones, suggesting that a normal coffee habit is unlikely to be a problem for most people. The concern appeared only at the higher end of consumption.
Drinking more than five cups a day was linked to lower bone density in the study. One possible explanation is that the caffeine in coffee can interfere with how the body absorbs calcium, a mineral essential for building and maintaining bone. Notably, the association was stronger among women with a higher lifetime intake of alcohol.
The case for tea

Tea told a gentler story. In the same group of women, tea drinking was associated with a slightly higher total hip bone mineral density, hinting that the nation's other favourite hot drink might play a modestly supportive role in keeping bones robust into old age.
The benefit appeared more pronounced among women living with obesity, and researchers point to a group of plant compounds called catechins as a likely reason. These natural substances, abundant in tea, are thought to encourage the formation of new bone while slowing the processes that break bone down.
Keeping the findings in perspective
It is important not to overstate what a study like this can show. As Adjunct Associate Professor Enwu Liu observed, even small improvements in bone density can translate into fewer fractures when spread across very large populations, but the researchers were careful to stress that the differences they measured were modest.
They also cautioned that the results were not large enough to justify major changes in any individual's daily habits. Because this was an observational study, it can reveal patterns and associations, but it cannot prove that coffee or tea directly cause the changes in bone density that the numbers describe.
Small habits across whole populations
Where studies like this become genuinely useful is at the level of public health. When millions of people share similar habits, a small shift in bone strength across the whole group can add up to a meaningful reduction in painful and costly fractures, even if the effect on any single person remains quite minor.
What it means for your cup
For most people, the practical message is calm and simple. There is no need to give up a beloved coffee habit, though those who drink very large amounts might consider easing back, and adding a splash of milk can help offset any effect on calcium. A cup of tea, meanwhile, may be a pleasant and gentle addition to the day.
Above all, drinks are only one small piece of a much larger picture. The real foundations of strong bones remain a balanced diet with enough calcium and vitamin D, regular weight bearing exercise, and sensible lifestyle choices, with what you sip alongside them playing a modest supporting role.
