In all the years I have spent writing about the Australian economy, from iron ore shipments to the machinery of superannuation, I am not sure I have encountered a transformation with higher stakes than the one now under way in our power sector. Quietly and not so quietly, the country is attempting to rewire the entire electricity system that keeps its homes and industries running, and the financial implications are enormous.
A Grid Built on Coal
For the best part of a century, Australia has been a nation powered overwhelmingly by coal. Vast black coal and brown coal plants formed the backbone of the grid, delivering cheap and reliable electricity that helped underpin decades of industrial growth and comfortable suburban living across the sprawling continent.
That long era, however, is now drawing steadily to a close. Current projections suggest that around two thirds of the remaining coal fleet is expected to shut down by 2035 in order to meet government targets, while the last of the coal plants in Queensland are scheduled to retire by the year 2049.
The Renewable Surge

Rushing in to fill the gap is a wave of renewable energy that is arriving faster than many once believed possible. In the final quarter of 2025, renewable sources supplied fully 51 percent of the National Electricity Market, and across the year as a whole they now account for well over 40 percent of total electricity demand.
Underpinning this shift is a headline ambition that is genuinely bold. The federal government has set a target for renewables to make up 82 percent of generation in the National Electricity Market by the year 2030. Whatever the obstacles, the overall direction of travel for the system has become unmistakably clear.
The Rooftop Revolution
One of the most remarkable features of the Australian story is happening not in remote wind farms but on ordinary suburban roofs. The rapid and relentless uptake of household rooftop solar panels, increasingly paired with home battery storage, has turned countless families into small scale generators of their own clean electricity.
This quiet revolution in what the industry calls consumer energy resources is doing more than cutting household bills. By feeding cheap power into the network, it is actively easing the cost burden on the entire national grid, making everyday homes an unlikely but powerful engine of the whole transition.
The 2030 Reality Check
For all this momentum, the official scorekeepers are urging caution. The Australian Energy Market Operator, in its 2026 Integrated System Plan, projected that under its central scenario renewables would reach around 75 percent of supply by 2030, falling short of the headline 82 percent target by a stubborn seven percentage points.
The single biggest culprit behind this expected shortfall is wind power. In a sobering revision, the operator downgraded its forecast for utility scale wind capacity in 2030 to just 26 gigawatts, a sharp reduction from the 40 gigawatts it had pencilled in only two years earlier in its previous blueprint.
The Economics of the Shift
From a purely financial standpoint, the numbers involved are staggering. Delivering this transition demands colossal investment, not only in new wind and solar farms but also in the unglamorous but essential business of transmission lines and large scale storage to keep the system stable when the weather does not cooperate.
Encouragingly, a boom in battery installations has helped drive one of the strongest renewable years on record. Yet persistent bottlenecks in building new transmission, alongside slow planning approvals for large wind projects, continue to act as a brake on progress and threaten to push the most ambitious goals further out of reach.
A Long Road to Net Zero
It is worth remembering that 2030 is only a milestone, not the finish line. The full journey towards a low emissions grid is a project spanning decades, one that must constantly balance the competing demands of reliability, affordability and the pressing need to cut emissions from a historically carbon heavy economy.
For me, this ranks among the defining economic challenges facing Australia in our time. The great switch away from coal is no longer a question of if, but firmly one of how quickly and at what cost. It is a story I will be following closely, because how we answer it will shape the country for generations to come.
