Researchers have proposed several mechanisms that could help explain the link. Ultra processed foods have been associated with oxidative stress and inflammation, and their high content of fat, sodium and sugar may play a role in how the body regulates sleep and rest.

The authors of the review were careful to stress the limits of the evidence. Because the studies were observational in nature, they can only suggest potential associations and cannot establish that ultra processed foods directly cause sleep problems in people.
