Cross-border diplomacy also played a quiet but vital role, with cooperation between Russia and neighbouring China helping to protect a population that does not recognise national boundaries. Saving a wandering predator, it turns out, requires countries to work together as much as it requires rangers on the ground.

A national park built for a cat

At the heart of the effort sits a remarkable piece of planning. In 2012, the Russian government created Land of the Leopard National Park, a protected area deliberately designed around the animal it was named after, taking in all of the leopard's known breeding areas.

The park is estimated to cover around 72 percent of the suitable leopard habitat on Russian territory, an unusually complete safety net for a single species. Since 2016, conservation scientists have partnered with the park on the painstaking work of monitoring and protecting its elusive residents.

The invisible threat in the genes
